Dubois, Wyo. - For the second consecutive year, the global travel company Expedia has chosen the tiny town of Dubois as the best location in Wyoming to find “a peaceful retreat and a good place to relax.”
Each year, Expedia names its choices for the “best place to escape to in every state.” As in 2018, Expedia again favors Dubois as the place to “cure your frontier fever and fulfill your Wild West daydreams.”
The listing mentions only a few of the relaxing adventures available year-round in the broad expanse of wilderness surrounding the remote community, including horseback riding and yoga retreats, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, hiking and kayaking.
With its population of barely 1,000 year-round residents, Dubois retains an authentic old-West feel and a sense of tranquility and isolation. Located in the scenic Wind River Valley, the town is barely a 90-minute drive away from busy Jackson Hole and the southern entrance of Yellowstone Park, along a gently sloping mountain highway often visited by native wildlife such as antelope, bears and eagles.
The Expedia accolade makes Dubois the best place for an escape in the Western state that the New York Times recently included among the must-see international destinations in its “starter kit for escaping into the world.” It ranked the state of Wyoming among the 52 places to go in 2019.
Founded in 1914, Dubois is the home of some of the first “dude ranches” in the American West. In 2018, True West magazine designated Dubois as the town with the most authentic Old-West architecture. The surrounding landscape boasts some of the best fly fishing in the lower 48 states as well as legendary elk hunting in autumn and snowmobiling in winter.
